The Tocumen Airport and it's Location

Tocumen Airport is located about 17 km. from Panama City and it is a large facility and center of flights heading to and from the Caribbean, South America, North America and Central America. Also one European city (Madrid) is served.

According to the FAA this is one of Central America’s most modern airports. However, it wasn’t always that way and it went through some changes during the 1940s to the present date.

Brief History

The first Tocumen International Airport was inaugurated on June 1, 1947 and it started operations without construction being completed. The main administration and terminal building was inaugurated seven years later.

However, given the history of Panama as a transit country, because of its geographical location, the original terminal became too small for its demand. Hence, a new terminal was in the planning and construction began in 1971. The Tocumen River was diverted from its original course for the construction of the new terminal. The new airport, given the same name, was inaugurated on August 15, 1978, and the inaugural flight was on September 5, 1978.

The terminal went through a brief change of names during the 1980s to Omar Torrijos International Airport after the death of Panama’s leader Omar Torrijos, but the name did not last, and soon reverted back to Tocumen International Airport following the overthrow of Panama’s President, Manuel Noriega in1989.

In 2006 it underwent a major expansion and renovation program in order to modernize and improve its facilities.
