Portobello Panama

Portobello in Panama is located in the Caribbean Coast close to the city of Panama. It takes two hours to reach the city of Panama from Portobello. There are several marina projects under construction on this charming Caribbean Coastline. Portobello is drenched in history due to its rich colonial past. There were several pirates who came here to loot during the reign of the Spanish people. The renowned Henry Morgan was one. Spain was using Portobello as a shipping center at that time (for profitable loot). At that time, several forts were constructed in order to protect this natural harbor. You can still find the ruins even today. This is perhaps one of the reasons why so many real estate investors in Panama prefer this area to many of the other areas. The historical background of Portobello is unmatched and attracts tourists for the bold monuments and historical forts, the ruins of which have stood in the test of time.

The forts of Santiago and San Geronimo can be reached by a five minute walk from the pier. The remains La Merced, the renowned church as well as the church of San Felipe (which was the last building to be built by the Spaniards) are located close to the “Customs House”. San Felipe was inaugurated in 1814. It is one of the priceless relics and comprises a beautifully carved statue of Jesus of Nazareth. It is made up of dark wood and so is commonly known as the “Black Christ”.

Every year during the 21st of October, the entire city of Portobello bedecks itself in festive mood and celebrates in honor of Black Christ. At that time, the city is filled with people in a candlelight procession. At that time the statue of the Black Christ is brought out of the church. It is carried on a platform borne by 80 men. The Christ statue is followed by hundreds of pilgrims carrying candle—this surely is a sight to see.
