Panama Mountains

These are the only mountains between northern Central America and the Colombian Andes, and this isolation leads to many endemic species of birds. In the Chiriqui Highlands you will find two of Panama’s finest national parks.

Volcan Baru National Park

Volcan Baru National Park is located in the western region of Panama in the province of Chiriqui. It can be accessed from two areas: first, from the region of Boquete, on the eastern side of the park, along a rocky 14 km road that arrives at the top and secondly, from the area of Cerro Punta, on the western side of the park from the Resingo site, where the National Authority of the Environment has refuge and a visitor’s center.

This park is not only home to the Volcan Baru volcano but also to the quetzal, one of the few places in the world where you can see this magnificent bird. A favorite of the AudubonSociety tours, birding here is considered exceptional, and wild life abounds. If you are a true hiker, a strenuous hike will take you to the top of the highest of the seven craters, where on a clear morning, you can see a fantastic view of both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean.

La Amistad International Park

This park has a surface of 14,000 hectares, with an altitude range of 1800 to 3465 meters, which is the highest point of Panama and corresponds to the Baru volcano. It stretches across the boundaries of Panama and Costa Rica and from the coral reefs of the Caribbean Sea to the peaks of the Talamanca mountain range. With an array of ecosystems such as cloud forest, coral reefs, mangrove forests, and cultural diversity, it is the most culturally and ethnically diverse region in both Panama and Costa Rica. This is a world heritage site and is home to numerous species of plants, birds, and animals.
