Panama Canal Cruises

Brief History

Historians have traced mention of constructing a passage in Panama back as far as the 16th century but clearly construction did not take place around this time. However, the notion of building a link between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean in Panama refused to go away and eventually the idea strongly resurfaced in the 1880s when a new attempt at constructing a Canal was undertaken by the French. This was unsuccessful and the Panama Canal was not properly constructed until the America intervened and the Canal was completed in 1914. Although the Canal has brought prosperity and better links to the people of Panama, it should always be noted that just about 30,000 people died during construction of the Panama Canal, which is a heavy price to pay.

Although many operators offer the opportunity to travel the length of the Panama Canal in one journey, many travelers like to stop off at various locations throughout their journey and learn more about the local heritage and culture of Panama. A great number of cruises along Panama’s Canal offer this opportunity and specific trips can be booked for a number of reasons, depending on whether you want to see wildlife or tribes. There are many great pierces of wildlife that can only be found in Panama and Panama also plays host to many species that are in danger of dying out. This means taking one of the cruises is an ideal opportunity to see some of these creatures before it’s too late. No matter what you really want to see when you travel through the stretch of water, it can be easily achieved. The abundance of variety and choice ensures there are many great reasons to visit Panama and the Canal cruises are just one of the factors that are influencing many people’s opinions about the country.

Visions to Expand Canal

Yes, the Canal is a hugely important part of everyday life in Panama but that doesn’t mean there is no room for expansion and there are exciting plans for the Canal. Companies that offer journeys through the country are happy about this but the distributors who transport goods by this method are extremely happy as there will be greater capacity to carry more stock and cargo. The size of boats has dramatically increased since the construction of the Panama Canal and there has been a need for more space for ships to travel.

There are plans to expand the size of the Canal and there is hope that an extra lock will be added to improve the facility that currently exists. It may be a rich part of the countries heritage and tradition but this does not mean that anyone should rest on their laurels and the proposed improvements to the Panama Canal should ensure that the country continues to thrive for many years to come.
