The Panama Balboa

The Panama balboa (PAB) is the official currency of Panama. One balboa comprises 100 centesimos. The currency of this island was named balboa after the Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa who is supposed to have discovered the Pacific Ocean. The Columbian peso was replaced by the balboa in 1904 after the country gained independence. Since there is very little exchange rate volatility, the US visitors of Panama are always benefitted (they use the US dollar which is generally used in Panama. In Panama it is called the balboa).

Replacement of Current Currency

The value of balboa is equivalent to a dollar. This phenomenon is also known as dollarization. It has given financial stability to the people of Panama and also helped in considerable economic growth. Although this currency is still in use, the people of Panama prefer dollar for exchange purposes. This leads to cheaper imports and better foreign direct investments. The economy of Panama is service based rather than manufacture based. Therefore, the replacement of balboa and use of dollar (or dollarization, as it is called) produces favorable exchange rate for the country.
