They consisted of 100 mules and muleteers. When gold and silver were brought here, the governor used to meet the buyers and sellers. He used to decide the price. During a fair of 60 days the gold and silver were sold in a place next to the custom house. The merchants used to erect large tents from the sails of the ships. The fair would even last for a period of 90 days. During this period even those houses which were left uninhabited were rented for as large an amount as 5,000 pesos. Previously most of the trade links between the Spanish and the USA were done through this route. A short drive along the coast of Portobello will lead you to the Spanish forts and churches.
