Gatun Lake leads to the Panama Canal across the Isthmus and is formed by the Chagres River. In a place called Gatun, a dam was constructed between the two mountains. The dams measure 8,400 feet in length and half a mile in width. Man made mountains forced the waters of the River Chagres which was impounded into a valley.

It therefore formed the largest artificial lake of the world. It is nearly equal in size to the greatest lake in the world called Lake Geneva in Switzerland. Gatun Lake is located on the shoreline of the Atlantic and is nearly 85 feet above the sea level. The Gatun Lake is an ideal site for freshwater fishing. Numerous fishes such as peacock bass, tilapia, perch, tarpon, and snook saturate the fresh water of the Gatun Lake.
