El Valle Panama

El Valle de Anton is an hour and a half’s drive from Panama City. It is a fertile volcanic Valley filled wit bright flowers, square trees and golden frogs. It is said to be an escape for a weekend retreat from Panama’s lowland heat. Most of the houses in El Valle de Anton are surrounded by trees, so the overall impression is still green and unspoiled.

Climate

El Valle de Anton's temperature is warm during the day, but it feels less oppressive than on the coast and it is considerably cooler at night.

El Valle de Anton ’s Major attractions

Although there is no real center to the town, if you know where to look you’ll find more places to visit per square kilometer than anywhere else in Panama.

The first priorities for most tourists visiting this Panamanian island are the famous square trees and golden frogs, both of which can be found in the grounds of the Hotel Campestre. The tiny frogs can be seen in a large tank in front of the hotel buildings, while an unmarked path leads up into the woods to a grove of square trees about five minutes into the walk. It has been said that the look more like a bright yellow color and the trees seem more flat-sided than square, but this is all part of the El Valle de Anton experience.

A major draw to this small quaint Panamanian island is the market which is held every Sunday morning in a market hall on the main road. You can purchase vegetables, fruits, plans and flowers. You can also purchase art crafts, such as wooden bowls, paintings on wood, hammocks, molas, baskets and ceramics. Be sure to negotiate the price!

This island has some petroglphs—rocks decorated with what are believed to be pre-Colombian art. The rocks with their strange designs are worth a visit, if only for the walk, which gives you lovely views of the valley. It is about a five minute walk from where you park your car and you can always continue further uphill past the petroglyphs. The path leads upstream past several waterfalls, to the top of La India Dormidea, where you will see a magnificent view of a hill in the shape of a sleeping woman.

Other main attractions are the Zoo and Botanical Gardens El Nispero, Helicopter tours of the area, The thermal ponds, La Moles waterfalls, Horse back riding, hiking and some great bird watching.

Diverse Community

El Valle de Anton is different from other communities in Panama, in that it represents a laid back small well-planned, tranquil community made up of friendly locals, elite affluent old established families that have made this valley their weekend and vacation residence, middle class residents, American and other foreigners, who are living together, socializing and enjoying the most beautiful dormant inhabitant volcanic crater in the Americas.
